Fairport Convention: Sandy Denny (vocals); Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol (guitar, background vocals); Ashley Hutchings (bass); Martin Lamble (drums). Additional personnel: Dave Swarbrick (fiddle, mandolin); Ian Matthews, Marc Ellington (vocals); Trevor Lucas (triangle). The transitional album before Fairport Convention invented folk rock with Liege And Lief, on this album they stretch out on longer numbers and introduce Dave Swarbrick, who plays some particularly fine fiddle on the lengthy 'A Sailor's Life'. Richard Thompson continued to mature with 'Genesis Hall' and 'Cajun Woman'. Equally impressive is Sandy's beautiful voice on her stellar composition 'Who Knows Where Time Goes'. Dylan abounds with three songs and 'Percy's Song' is a highlight. To round it up, a UK hit single, shock horror, with Dylan's 'Si Tu Dois Partir'. Also a bold move for a little-known band was not having their name on the album sleeve.

Unhalfbricking--A Nonsense Title is Fairport Convention's Best Album
Pros: arguably the definitive British folk-rock album, and Sandy Denny's best work Cons: Sandy Denny is better known as the voice on Led Zeppelin's "The Battle for Evermore" Bottom Line: The Past and the Future, Celebrated and Turned into Song
Pros: A remarkable work that interprets a classic folk tradition and convinces us of its relevance. Cons: You may find this album a bit hard to come by (the original is on Island; it's been re-released on CD by Carthage). Who Knows Where the Time Goes
Pros: Fairport at their most inventive...and playful! Cons: British Folk Rock, circa 1969, doesn't necessarily translate seamlessly to today. Bottom Line: |
