Portishead: Beth Gibbons (vocals); Adrian Utley (guitar, Hammond organ, bass, Theremin); Geoff Barrow (Fender Rhodes piano, drums, programming). Additional personnel: Strings Unlimited (strings); Dave McDonald (nose flute); Andy Hague (trumpet); Neil Solman (Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond organ); Gary Baldwin (Hammond organ); Clive Deamer (drums); Richard Newell (programming). Beautiful Nightmares
Pros: Inventive beats, soul-crushing vocals, incredibly developed atmospheres. Cons: Two songs are more about ambiance than hooks. Bottom Line: The songs she sang when James Bond left her
Pros: Sensual melancholy played and sung over snaky rhythms. Interesting retro samples, nocturnal atmosphere. Cons: I tried my best to find one, but to no avail. Bottom Line: Menacing trip hop classic: often imitated, never bettered
Pros: Sublime production & vocals; divinely sad; surprisingly accessible. Cons: Perhaps too left-of-the-middle for some; lack of variety in sound; not happy music. Bottom Line: Uneasy Listening
Pros: Original effects and Beth Gibbon's spellbinding voice - a true classic Cons: May be a bit depressing for some Bottom Line: A war to fight
Pros: The beauty of despair! Cons: Undeniably, this is a somewhat weird album ... Bottom Line: Not my normal style, but amazing anyway.
Pros: Everything: the dark tone, the grooves, and, most of all, amazing songstress Beth Gibbons. Cons: A few weak tracks, but they're easily overlooked. Bottom Line: Stunning, and highly addictive; one of the best albums ever
Pros: 50 minutes of excellent, innovative music Cons: very addictive (but that's not a bad thing) You will never ever tire of this phenomenal CD
Pros: The best vocals in all trip-hopdom Cons: Not the happiest of lyrics Better late then never
Pros: Everything. Cons: CD ends. Bottom Line: Portishead Shines Beautifully
Pros: Trip-hop pioneers Cons: None Bottom Line: |
