A recent trend by Hasbro toys is to have their different toylines cross-over with each other. This can be seen with the Star Wars line of Transformers, Marvel Superhero line of Transformers and even with Mr. Potato Head, who previously has had a Darth Vader verison (Darth Tater) and a stormtrooper verison (Spud-Trooper) from the Star Wars francise (which is also expanding to include more characters). With the sudden resurgance of Transformers, especially because of the 2007 movie, it is no surprise that Mr. Potato Head would get the Transformers makeover.
Optimash Prime is a Mr. Potato Head verison of Optimus Prime, the leader of the heroic Autobots. His body is the standard Mr. Potato Head body and even comes with his classic accessories (mouth, mustache, nose, eyes). However, what sets him apart is his Optimus Prime accessories. His arms capture the classic look of Optimus Prime's arms from the orginal Transformer series during the 1980's (and also seen on the Masterpiece Optimus Prime figure). They are red with some yellow and blue, with truck smoke stacks at the top. His feet are blue and again look like Prime's feet. His helmet is made up of 3 different pieces - the mouth cover (which goes into the nose slot) which is connected to a mac truck grill (like the orginal prime had on his chest) and then the main helmet, which goes over his head and around the back (Mr. Potato Head's normal eyes are used). The mouth piece then connects to the rest of the helmet.
A nice little feature of Optimash Prime, since he can't actually transform, is that he comes with a mini-mac truck that looks like Prime's truck mode. The piece is small (a little bigger than a matchbox car) and could have really benefited from wheels that move but otherwise it is a nice little touch.
The biggest flaw I see with this toy is a lack of some sort of weapon - Optimus Prime is a defender of the right and good. He could have either come with his signature blaster (maybe made to look like something releated to potatoes) or the classic engery ax.
The quality of the plastic used to make the toy is very good. Some pieces are flexible which means that they won't break easily when younger children play with them. The coloring and details on the Optimus Prime pieces are really nice and shows that the designers really payed attention to the source material and wanted to make sure that fans would be happy with it. Priced at under $10, this toy is a great deal, both for children and those who are children at heart!
Optimash Prime plays great tribute to a classic toy and is a fun way to get younger children into the Transformers line or, for parents whose kids may want the toys but don't want all the violence associated wtih them. Overall, a good buy!! I hope to see other Transformer inspired Mr. Potato Heads in the future.
