Author's Review
Outlander is easily my favorite book. I've read it at least 10 times, and each time I see something that I missed the previous times. It actually took me a while to get into it, but my friend who recommended it said "Give it 100 pages... if you're not hooked, give it up." Well, it took about half that long, and the rest is history (pun intended).
First of all, I love books about relationships. Whether it be sisters, brothers, lovers, spouses... and Outlander has a plethora of relationships. Their stories are interwoven and connected in so many ways, and just when you think you have it figured out, a new wrinkle comes in.
I also love Diana's characters. They are rich and real, never perfect, often infuriating. No one just "falls in love" because the other person is there (something I HATE in other books). You see their best and worst parts, you think about them, talk about them, dream about them... they get addictive.
Reading about the Scottish highlands has made me go out and do "real" research of my own, to learn more about the Jacobite Rebellion and other issues surrounding the times. It's fascinating to read the "true" stories, and imagine Jamie and Claire right in the thick of things.
Outlander is not for everyone. It is not a quick and easy read, it is not light, nor is it easily forgettable. But if you want something you can sink your teeth into, pick up this book!
